20 years after: tell us your story

August 12th, 2009 by andym

Where were you in ‘89? The legacy of that revolutionary year is not just something for the historians. It lives on in the stories of Czechs, Slovaks, Poles, Hungarians, Bulgarians and Romanians who lived through it. TOL wants to hear yours.

As part of our special coverage marking the 20th anniversary of the fall of communism in Central and Eastern Europe, we want to hear from you (or your parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, friends …). Share your memories of the upheavals of 1989 and their aftermath. Tell us what your expectations were 20 years ago, and how you think things turned out. Explain how your life has changed at home and at work, what you like about your country today and what you don’t like.

Write it down, tell it to a voice recorder or video camera, or interview relatives and friends, and send the results to 1989@tol.org. We’ll post items in our 1989 special section and on dedicated pages at Facebook and other community sites. Native-language contributions are welcome but for audio and video material please provide a written English translation.

Any questions? Send them to blogs@tol.org.
